The south of Mauritius harbours unusual places and is only revealed to those who venture there to discover them. The poet Robert Edward Hart described this place by saying that nothing is sweeter to his heart as much as this land where he lived. He even wanted his ashes to be spread in this place so that a rose could bloom there.
Gris-Gris, set at the tip of this blustery southern edge, stuns the visitor with a magnificent fresco that is nature’s form of unadulterated art. This has been wonderfully captured by FujiFilm’s latest X-T3 mirrorless digital camera, whose pedigree comprises of a unique colour reproduction technology that produces amazing image quality in both stills and videos.
Fitted with Fujinon XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 OIS Zoom Lens, with this single versatile zoom featuring a maximum aperture of f/2.8 and a broad focal length to take wide angle as well as telephoto images, I can capture all the scenes that my mind can imagine.
The camera is compact, portable and offers a fast linear motor-driven autofocus with in-built image stabilising feature that helps as I compose myself against the Indian Ocean breezes billowing atop this clifftop beauty.
Arriving during the waning of the evening sun, the XT-3’s X-Trans CMOS 4 with a new low base ISO of 80, is able to capture the layers of watery fold when ocean current meets the shore as well as the majesty of a setting sun and its final burst of brilliance.
This is achieved with 2.16M phase detection pixels – four times more compared to current models – increasing the autofocus points necessary to make better picture adjustments.
The ability to take perfect pictures in low light coupled with ultra high resolution images of 26.1MP and 4k quality video featuring the video-specialised Film Simulation mode “ETERNA” guarantees the highest quality results for budding travel photo and video buffs.
But it is in the still images that I enjoy shooting. It reflects the tapestry of raw panoramic beauty that only the naked eye can fathom, and more, as seen through a 3.69-million-dot high resolution electronic viewfinder with a high magnification ratio of 0.75x.
From scenic panoramas to macro photography, the X-T3 performs just as admirably, especially when paired with Fujinon Xf56mmf1.2 R lens, as evident in the close-up shot of my beautiful wife.
A fast f/1.2 lens with a focal length of 85mm that delivers beautiful background bokeh, its incredible resolving power is due to a new optical design featuring 11 elements in eight groups.
Two ED (extra-low dispersion) elements and one double-sided aspherical element are used to control spherical and chromatic aberrations, while a further four of the elements feature convex surfaces to ensure excellent light coverage, even when shooting wide open.
When we finally depart, we take a few moments to take in what we can of the landscape and wonder when we may return to this heavenly site. A smile spread across our faces as we recall the hour we had spent walking, watching, and taking in various spectacular sights with the FujiFilm X-T3 mirrorless digital camera, knowing that our memories can now last forever.
